Introduction
The software WinCanVX has originally been developed for the assessment of local or continuous defects within pipeline networks. The scope of rehabilitation, as a consequence of damage assessment, is providing various methods that can be sub-divided into the following categories:
Repair: Rehabilitation of local pipe defects.
Renewal: Rehabilitation of continuous pipe defects over a certain length
Replacement: Total rebuilding of the pipeline by replacing all pipe elements over the whole section.
Each of these three categories contain a certain number of rehabilitation methods which are summarized as a catalog and are accessible directly from the rehabilitation module of WinCanVX. The user thus can assign a rehabilitation method to a specific defect via Drag & Drop.
WinCanVX hereby provides a standard selection of rehabilitation measures which may be modified or extended. In addition the user is also able to import and apply external rehabilitation catalogs.
The present documentation is describing the possibilities when planning pipe line rehabilitations using the software WinCanVX. It is therefore thought for rehabilitation professionals working in engineer offices or street working authorities and being responsible for the calculation of the costs a rehabilitation project will cause.
Damage Assessment
Based on the damage extent of a given number of pipe sections the user may start planning the rehabilitation jobs either manually or automatically:
Manual planning:
The user checks section per section for the damages and assigns the appropriate rehabilitation method via drag and drop.
Automated planning:
WinCanVX checks the whole project, recognizes repeatedly appearing damage codes, which are usually spread over the whole project and automatically assigns the appropriate rehabilitation method to them.
The overview below shows the panels Work Order Planning (1) and Work Order Position (2) the user will be needing when planning a pipeline rehabilitation with WinCan:
Rehabilitation Catalog
The installation of WinCanVX currently provides default rehabilitation catalogs for the English and German speaking area. They can all be modified with a separate catalogue editor you can open via the command Home > Rehab Catalogue Editor:
The editor interface then allows you to import and edit existing catalogues or to create new catalogues. Hit the buttons Catalog Settings > General and check the fields highlighted below:
Name of the catalogue file
Detailed description of the catalogue
Modification date
Default currency used for calculation of the rehabilitation costs
Default unit (Meter or Feet) used for assignment of the rehabilitation method
The most important commands of the symbol bar as well as a short description of their functionality are depicted and listed below:

Copy rehabilitation catalog from a database

Save changes done within the current rehabilitation catalog

Hitting the button Methods the user can have shown all predefined and hierarchically ordered methods of an existing rehabilitation catalogue.
You first have to import the catalogue via the button . The installation directory C:\Users\Public\Documents\CDLAB\Common\Catalogs\MethodCatalogs already contains default catalogs for the English and German speaking area:
The order of various methods a rehabilitation catalogue is shown as a tree structure. The catalogue is subdivided into method main and sub-groups (1, 2) that contain the single methods (3):
The catalogue editor allows the user to create and to change existing rehabilitation methods or to move a single method into another method group.
Create or select a method in the left part (A) of the editor interface and set its properties in the central part (B).
The right part (C) of the catalog editor is used to search for damage codes provided by the currently applied catalog. You can thus grab directly for a single method or sequence group listed in the panel on the left and move it via Drag & Drop to the selected damage code in the panel on the right.
Up to 3 different methods or sequence groups (also known as alternatives or cost variants) can be assigned to the same damage code.
Create and Edit Method Groups or Single Methods
Right-click on the desired main group and hit the corresponding context menu command to create a new method group (1):

Next you have to describe a method group or single method in detail within the central panel of the catalogue interface. Enter the desired name into the field Short-Name (Key) (1) and click into the field Text 1 (Method-group) (2), so the same name is going to be applied to this field too:
Single methods require more details regarding the calculation of their costs which you have to enter within an extended input mask as illustrated below:
Setting method parameters
Single methods have to be described precisely using different parameters: all fields that may therefor be needed are listed below. Select any rehabilitation method and go the parameter fields to enter or modify the values linked to it:
This field contains the name of the method.
This field is used to describe the method in detail.
Define the Unit, the prize will refer to.
Enter a basic price (Price 1) per unit for the selected method. In addition you may enter an alternative price (Price 2) per unit for the selected method.
Use the field Length Type to define which length the method should be applied to
Use this field to set the default length (i.e. value and unit) a specific method will be applied to (example: cutting roots, 1 m).
If the checkbox for Adjustable length is activated, the end point of a method can be moved directly to the desired location on the pipe graph via Drag & Drop.
Use this field to enter the lifespan of the selected method.
The field Color allows you to set the colors a method will be highlighted with in the pipe graph panel of WinCan and on the report page: hit the arrow button to pick the desired color from the palette.
Hit the selection button on the right of the field Symbol to assign a suitable symbol to the selected method which will also be shown in the pipe graph panel of WinCan as well as on the report page.
The field Memo supports a larger text size to describe the selected rehabilitation method in detail.
The check boxes inside the group Object type are used to set the object category (i.e. sections, laterals, manholes) the method can be applied to. Multiple selection is possible.
The check boxes inside the group Material are used to define which material the selected method is suitable for. Multiple selection is possible.
The check boxes inside the group Diameter are used to set the diameter range for the selected method. Multiple selection is possible.
The check boxes inside the group Profile are used to set the profile shape the method can be applied to. Multiple selection is possible.
This group of check boxes allows the user to set additional parameters the method may be applied to . Multiple selection is possible.
Define Sequence Groups:
Local repairs may require a bunch of methods to be applied at the same damage spot. If the same type of damage appears repeatedly within a larger project, you can define a sequence of methods that will be assigned automatically to that kind of damage.
Sequences of methods can also be defined inside the catalogue editor via the corresponding command in the context menu (1). First create a new sequence group, enter a sensible name (example: Joint tightening, Joint lining etc.) and assign all suitable single methods to it:
You may also browse for an existing single method (3), keep the right mouse key pressed and drag it to the desired sequence group. Hit the command Copy, so the method becomes a part of the sequence group.
Manual Planning of Rehabilitation
Based on the amount and/or the level of recorded damages the rehabilitation professionals have to decide, whether a simple repair or a renewal is required.
Select the preferred rehabilitation catalog from the Work Order panel (1) and move the suitable rehabilitation method to the damage spot on the pipe graph via Drag & Drop:
Start- and endpoint of the applied methods are then marked directly on the pipe graph and their tags can be moved freely with the mouse until the damage area is covered accordingly. Mind that the parameters of the selected rehabilitation method have been previously set as described below:
Length Type: Undefined
Default length: Value > 0
Adjustable length: activated
Click on the start point of the rehabilitation method on the pipe graph to highlight the corresponding record in the panel Work Order Position (2) where you can also delete it from:
Furthermore the panel Work Order Position calculates and shows the total rehabilitation costs for the currently selected section (3):
Automated Planning of Rehabilitation
A project in WinCanVX contains a certain number of sections which the same damage code has been assigned to repeatedly. The software thus is able to go through the project, detect the damage codes for all sections and to apply the suitable rehabilitation method automatically. The following pages describe the stepwise procedure therefor needed:
Go to the panel Work Order Planning, pick the desired catalog (3) and hit the button Automated Planning (4):
Hit the button Details (5) in the dialogue box below and assign each damage code the suitable method that you have to pick from the list box (6) in the column to the right:
As soon as you have confirmed your entries via the green OK-button the software looks for the corresponding damage codes inside the whole project database and assigns the desired rehabilitation method to them.
You can always undo your choice hitting the button Overview (7), click on the trash icon (8) for the selected method to delete it, and confirm again:
Automated Assignment of Rehabilitation Variants
Some customers (local water authorities, engineer offices etc.) would like to compare several variants of rehabilitation costs for a given pipeline system that has been inspected before. The example provided in this chapter thus shows how the user can easily assign up to 3 rehabilitation variants (alternatives) to a specific damage code.
Damage text: Roots
Damage codes (e.g. WRC):
Variant 1 (low cost level): Single method: Cutting roots
Variant 2 (medium cost level): Method sequence: Sealing joints
Variant 3 (high cost level): Method sequence: Reinforce joints
Open the rehabilitation catalogue editor and select the damage catalogue in the panel on the right which must correspond to the same catalogue the current project is based on (1):
Look for those damage codes, which you want to have assigned a rehabilitation method to (2). It's possible to determine up to three alternatives per damage code.
Move a suitable alternative to the corresponding damage code via Drag & Drop (3):
Move a currently assigned method to the trash bin icon via Drag & Drop to delete an alternative (4).
You may determine up to three alternatives in three different columns using the buttons Alternative 1, Alternative 2 and Alternative 3:
Save all these changes to the rehabilitation catalog and get back to WinCanVX.
Hit the section tab within the WinCanVX project, go the Work Order panel and click on the button Automated Planning (1).
Activate one of the previously defined rehabilitation alternatives via the corresponding button (2) within the dialogue box that follows. The assignment to the damage codes is done automatically (3) and has to be confirmed via the green OK button (4):
The software now is going to «scan» the whole database and automatically assigns the suitable method or method sequence to the corresponding damage code (5) as previously defined inside the rehabilitation catalogue (5).
Mind that you run the calculation for each rehabilitation variant separately before you forward your data to the end customer. Data output can be controlled with the command Activity Management > Job Overview and will finally result in three separate PDF-files for each variant.
Previously assigned variants must first be deleted in the dialogue box for Automated Planning:
Print Rehabilitation Plans
Printing of rehabilitation reports is done either for each section or as a summary that lists the total rehabilitation costs over all inspected sections.
Open the printing panel, select the report type Section Inspection (1)and activate the option Activities (2) to have the rehabilitation plan printed per section as depicted below:
This printing option is going to show the damage spot as well as the assigned rehabilitation method directly on the section inspection report, followed by a cost summary page for each section:
Export Rehabilitation Plans to MS-Excel
If you would like to print a summary of the total rehabilitation costs based on all inspected sections of the current project, just hit the tab command Activity Management > Job Overview:
The software then provides you a list in the leftmost tab rehabilitation list that contains the sub-total of the rehabilitation costs for each section (1) as well as the total rehabilitation costs over all inspected sections at the end of the list (2):
Hitting the button EXCEL is going to export this list to MS-Excel for further calculations or cost analysis. On the other hand it may be sufficient to save the current cost summary as a PDF file pushing the corresponding button PDF.
