WinCan Map

Concept of WinCan Map

WinCan Map is an additional module to WinCanVX and allows the user to import existing pipeline data provided by GIS managers (engineer offices, local water authorities etc.). The pipeline data usually are queried from a geographic information system (GIS) and sent to the TV operator as a file package in the SHAPE format.
The operator then imports the SHAPE files into WinCan Map where the pipeline network can be visualized on a background map. The objects to be inspected (i.e. sections and manholes) must then be selected and transferred into WinCanVX.
After this data transfer the operator is able to select a section in WinCanVX and have it shown directly in WinCan Map and vice versa. Uninspected and inspected sections are highlighted in different colours so the operator always gets a direct information about the inspection progress.

Import SHAPE files and show layers

  • Components required for SHAPE file packages: SHP, DBF, SHX

  • Check the SHAPE file set for sections and the SHAPE file set for manholes

  • Import SHP files into WinCan Map and show them as graphical layers

  • Verify that the section and manhole layer perfectly match to each other

  • Check the projection system for your region or country and apply it to all layers

  • Save the group of layers you imported in WinCan Map as a Map project (*.ttkgproject)

  • Set Map project as startup project.

Navigate to specific object or location

  • Free navigation and zoom via mouse

  • Navigate/Zoom to selected layer

  • Navigate/Zoom to selected object

Show GIS data

  • Check the field contents for sections: section name, upstream manhole, downstream manhole etc.

  • Check the field contents for manholes: manhole name, depth etc.

Note: the names used for upstream/downstream manholes in the section layer must correspond to the manhole names used in the manhole layer.

Modify layer properties

  • Change the aspect of lines (sections) and dots (manholes) to improve object visualization

  • Display specific information to the objects (section name, pipe diameter, manhole name etc.)

  • Save modified layer properties to the current Map project

Assign GIS-fields to WinCan fields (field mapping)

  • Field mapping for section layer:

  • Field mapping for manhole layer:

Note: the names used for GIS fields do not always give clear hints on the field content.

Transfer data into WinCanVX

  • Select an object (section or manhole) or a group of objects and transfer the selection to WinCan

  • Select a record in WinCan an show the corresponding object MAP

  • Select an object in MAP and show the corresponding record in WinCanVX

Add background layers

  • Add a DXF-plot providing outlines of streets and buildings as reference points for the pipeline network.

  • Add Map tiles providing georeferenced satellite images from the NOKIA server that improves geographic orientation within the pipeline network.

Note: DXF-plots must be provided by engineer offices or the local authorities whereas the access to the NOKIA server is a built-in feature of WinCan Map.

Data Output

  • Set output extent

  • Print output and save it as a PDF document

  • Export output as SHAPE files
