A plugin for the ESRI ArcGIS software which allows a bidirectional communication & interaction between WinCan VX and ArcGIS is available. The main purpose of this tool is:

  • Transfer data from ArcGIS to WinCan VX
  • Detect changes in the header data in WinCan VX and match it with the original data
  • One click to see where a section or manhole is located

This article shows how to install and how to use the WinCan ESRI Plugin (WinCanVXESRIAddIn.exe) (available at http://www.wincan.com/en/downloads/).

Instructions

Step-by-step guide

  1. Connect with WinCan VX
    1. Open the ArcMap test project
    2. Run WinCan VX and create a new test project
    3. Connect ArcMap with WinCan VX via the "Connect WinCan VX" button
  2. Field Mapping
    1. Select the section layer (1) Make also sure that the same layer is selected in the WinCan toolbar (2)

    2. Select Field Mapping

    3. Specify the field mappings

    4. To identify layer fields use right mouse click Identify…Install the latest WinCan VX ArcGIS plugin


  3. Data Transfer
    1. Select the sections you want to export, for this us a Select feature

    2. Select the desired section (use the select tool)

    3. Click Transfer Data

    4. Start transfer

    5. The sections should now have been transfered to WinCan VX
  4. Visualization
    1. Select any of the highlighting tools in the WinCan tool bar

    2. Select a section in WinCan VX. Now the corresponding section should be highlighted in ArcMap
  5. Visualization of inspection data
    1. Double-click a section in WinCan VX, enter some inspection data and some observations
    2. Click the "Reinitialize" button in the WinCan tool bar in ArcMap. The observations and the inspection (colored in green) should be visualized now

  6. Check for updated section data
    1. Select Field Mapping
    2. Check the mappings and make sure that the material field has been properly mapped
    3. Double-click a previously transfered section from ArcMap
    4. Change the Material value
    5. Click the "Check for updated section data" button. The changed header data should appear in the list below
