Sections

The Search & Replace tool works at two levels and always considers any applied filters as described in the section Using Filters in WinCan VX.  The panel can be used to:

  • Search for given field values and replace them with prescribed values.

  • Simply update field values with a given value regardless of its current value.

To get the best results from this tool, users should be very comfortable and experiences with using all of the filters described in Using Filters in WinCan VX.

At the time of writing this, the Search & Replace tool only works on the current grid view, so if you need to make changes to some header information in the section grid view, it is likely that you will also have to do it again in the lateral grid view.  There is a new future feature planned to give the user the option to apply this update to all grid views in one go.

Search and Replace 1

The Search & Replace tool.

To use the tool, simply launch it from the User Filter panel of the Tools ribbon and the pop-up window will look similar to the one used in the User Filter, but with less options.

In the example above, there are two replace options selected by the user:

  1. Replace the value ‘M5’ in the Road Number field with ‘M3’ every time that ‘M5’ exists.

  2. Replace the value for Town or City with ‘London’ in all data lines.

These are the two types of replace – Search & Replace and Simple Replace.  You can click on the green plus sign to add additional layers of replacement values all in one go and click on the ‘Replace’ button to execute the function.

After you click this there will be a small pop-up which tells you how many data records will be updated by this action where you can click Ok or Cancel.  This give you the opportunity to give the action a 2nd thought – how many records are you expecting to be updated by this action, and does the number look about right?

Click on the green tick to proceed or the red cross to cancel if it looks wrong.  You should have a good solid idea of the kind of response expected on your data to the design replacement before you use this tool.
